In humanities, this past semester, we have been studying social movements and their impact on our society. To finalize this study, Tory had us participate in a 3-part final assignment where we were allowed to research any social movement we wanted. We started with slide decks, then opinion essays, and lastly we all created some kind of final display of what we had learned. I choose to study how the art world can positively and negatively impact our society. All three of my final assignments were linked together by my belief that there should be no hierarchy in art culture. When the qualifications to becoming an artist reach unimaginable heights, it takes away the true power that art holds which is making change. I find this topic to be so paralyzing because this is something that affects my future. As an artist I want the resources for success to be accessible to someone like me. If I can’t afford to meet the standards of being a respectable artist, how can I make a name for myself in the art community? This project helped me realize that my art is valid, whether I go to art school or not won't decide if my art deserves to be credible. My art can make change as long as it come from a place of un-bias and truth. To make sure that stays true for me, I must find ways to surround myself with diversity so that my art can reach all lenses.
